"Walk a mile in my shoes..."
Forgotten. Alone. Anxious. With a whirl of repeating painful thoughts praying on their minds. Our Veterans and ex-emergency personnel often feel all this and more.
Many of the people we help feel ashamed. They don't identify with being a hero, or the glory of something like the Invictus Games. Some are homeless, addicted to drugs or alcohol. Some are simply lonely and isolated.
Taking the next step
Our Veterans can be camera-shy or understandably prefer to remain anonymous. So during our fund-raising activities, we represent them with a symbolic pair of army issue boots.
The boots represent the saying not to judge someone until you've walked a mile in their shoes. It's one of the key principles behind our work at FirstLight Trust.
